I never seem to find the time or energy to post here as well as my other blogs. Please visit my blog on the love of JUNK. I will now share my love of vintage postcards there as I find them.

A JOYOUS EASTER ~ VINTAGE POSTCARD EARLY 1900's To Emil Batt from Orando Gregg

Hope that you all are having a great Easter weekend. Here is a pretty vintage postcard from the early 1900's.
A Joyous Easter is the heading. Features an adorable child reading a cook book on how to cook Egg while four adorable little bunnies hold their colored eggs.

Post card is not stamped or dated but is addressed to Master Emil Batt from Orando Gregg.
There is no address so this does not tell me where they were living at this time period.

Friendship Friday ~ 1905 Bremerton Washington Street View

I love old post cards of town views. They can be a great asset to family genealogy files.

My family was not here in 1905 but I could not resist picking it up to resell.

This post card is of Pacific Avenue in Bremerton, Washington.

Postmarked Sept 29 1905 Bremerton Washington and mailed to Miss Mabel Tucker of Del Norte Colorado.

Written on the front is Puget Sound very good? Bremerton Wash 9/29/05 We have ? dock for repairs. What is written next is hard to make out for sure. Ends with regards from ?

I love the view of the street. On the right side is a barber pole. The building next to the barber pole has an awning and above is a sign that looks like ?ardshey? book store. If you look with a magnifying glass you can see a woman starting to cross the street and gentlemen in the street and what looks like buggies.

I found this information about Bremerton at Wikipedia. Here is a little information around the time the post card was mailed.

Bremerton was platted by German immigrant-turned-Seattle entrepreneur William Bremer in 1891. Three years earlier, a U.S. Navy commission determined that Point Turner, between the protected waters of Sinclair and Dyes inlets, would be the best site in the Pacific Northwest on which to establish a shipyard. Recognizing the large number of workers such a facility would employ, Bremer and his business partner and brother-in-law, Henry Hensel, purchased the undeveloped land near Point Turner at the inflated price of $200 per acre. In April 1891, Bremer arranged for the sale of 190 acres (0.77 km2) to the Navy at $50 per acre. This land became part of the initial footprint of the Puget Sound Navy Yard.

Bremerton was officially incorporated on October 15, 1901 with Alvyn Croxton serving as the city's first mayor. Progress in the new city soon faced a major crisis, as Navy Secretary Charles Darling moved all repair work to the Mare Island Navy Yard in California in November 1902. Darling cited reports from commanders that the Bremerton waterfront was rife with prostitution, opium houses and frequent strongarmed robberies of sailors. Politics were probably also at play, as local newspapers reported that the city's incorporation left the shipyard essentially landlocked without room to expand. A dispute ensued between Mayor Croxton, who wanted to shutter all saloons in Bremerton, and three members of the city council, who attempted to block his efforts. Croxton eventually won out and the council voted to revoke all liquor licenses in June 1904. With the ban, Darling reestablished the navy yard as a port of call. Saloons had begun to return to business within two years, however.

In 1908, the city library and Union High School were established to serve the educational needs of the 2,993 residents recorded in the 1910 U.S. Census. During World War I, submarine construction and the addition of a third drydock caused the shipyard's workforce to balloon to over 4,000 employees. Growth due to the war effort and the 1918 annexation of the city of Manette, east of Bremerton on the Port Washington Narrows, can be seen in the 1920 census, which reported a population of 8,918. Bremerton absorbed Charleston, its neighboring city to the south in 1927. Population reached 10,170 in 1930.

Here is another great vintage post card. This one is dated 1923 and sent to Kansas and to the Foster family. It was mailed from Powderly Texas. No message written which is sad. We do not know who it came from.

I love the guy sitting and scratching his head. Message is

" I like you so darn much, I can't get my mind off it!

Note the messy desk, it is as messy as mine.

VINTAGE POSTCARD Down Town Chicago 1950's Vintage Thingies Thursday

Today's vintage postcard is of Chicago again. This one is probably from the early 1950's judging by the cars.

This one is of down town Chicago. Looking north on State Street toward intersection of Washington and Randolph streets.

Post card states that here are the two busiest corners of America's second largest city.

I love old post cards they can be great additions to family history. One of my ancestors lived in Chicago back in the 1890's but only stayed a few years. I have visited only once but hope to make it back again some day.

Hotel Sherman Chicago Illinois 1943 Vintage Postcard

Today's vintage post card is of the Hotel Sherman in Chicago Illinois and is postmarked 1943.

The Sherman is undoubtedly one of the most famed hotels in the United States. Located in Chicago's Loop. It has 1,700 rooms.

Look at the great cars and even a vintage bus parked in front of the hotel. I love these old hotel postcards.

I love postcards of old hotels. They stood high in the sky and seemed so elegant.

This postcard is of the Washington Duke Hotel in Durham, North Carolina.

Note the great vintage automobiles in front of the hotel.

The back of the postcard is 1949 and is addressed to the Foster family of Newton Kansas from A.J. and Opal.

The stamp area is marked AZO with four triangles all pointing up dating this to 1904 to 1918.

This postcard is of The Alamo built 1718 in San Antonio, Texas

Very pretty and colorful. We visited San Antonio and the Alamo over 10 years ago. First time seeing the Alamo and would love to visit again.

Back of post cards says

The sacred Alamo stands within the very heart of the business district of the city of San Antonio. It was erected in 1718 by the Franciscan Monks and was originally the Chapel of the Mission of San Antonio de Valera. It was within the gray stone walls of the quaint old Chapel, March 6 1836 that Travis , Barrett, Bowie, Crockett and 170 unsung heroes gave their lives in defense of Texas liberty.

If you have never visited and get the chance to see the Alamo I recommend it. They say it is one of the most haunted places in the USA. I did not see any ghosts on my visit but I did feel a sense of sadness and quiet. It was is one of the most eerie places I have ever visited.

Vintage Postcard lot of (5) Royal 76 Union Oil Company Scenes Of The West series

Lake Washington Bridge, Seattle, is a tribute to the ingenuity of American Engineers. Except for entrances the bridge is full floating, being supported by pontoons. A section can be moved to accomodate navigation.

Lake Crescent, a beautiful 11 mile long lake surrounded by mountains, is a resort center of the Olympic Peninsula. Reached off U. S. Highway 101 at the northern edge of Olympic National Park.

Deception Pass Bridge connecting Fidalgo and Whidby Islands presents view of Puget Sound. To drive over it take the cut off west from Mt. Vernon, off highway 99.

Stevens Pass, midway between Everett and Wentchee where U.S. Highway 2 crosses the Cascade Mountains. Elevation 4061 feet.

San Juan Island lying between Washington and Vancouver Island.

I would date these from the 1940's.

Welcome to Postcard Friendship Friday... this is a real cute vintage postcard that I found some time back either in California or Texas.

Adorable young boy or girl in sailor outfit looking out at the sea. Is marked on the front Copyrighted 1906 Robert McCrum.

Is postmarked Mar 15 and 9:30 in the morning but date is not there.

Addressed to Miss Adele Bach of Saint Louis. On the side is written Aunt Bessie and what looks like Camforth Publishers N.Y.

Do you think this is a real photo postcard? I am not sure.

It is adorable no matter what.

Working To Identify Real Photo Postcard 1909 - 1914

Take a peek at this great Real Photo Postcard. It came out of family papers.

This group of children are standing in front of a black board with writing so they are in school.

Take a peek at their clothing. Young man second child from the right is in a sailor outfit. The hats the bonnets are amazing. There is young boy and girl second row and she is holding on to his arm. Probably her brother.

The back is unused except for a question mark some one wrote. The stamp area is marked by Velox around it with triangles dates it 1909 to 1914. Just noticed a big clue. On back is marked L E Conger Druggest, Mora Minnesota. This tells me it is from my mother's side of the family.

Such an adorable group of children. Wish I knew who they were. Need to study it more. My grandmother Grace lived in Mora at this time. She would of been 17 so not her but could very well be her younger sister born 1906 or brother born 1909.

But what I do not understand is what I think is humor of the time.

This is the last of my vintage New Year postcards. They are so pretty. I love this one. The snow is falling and we have a carriage with two pretty horses taking the some one to a party.

There is even some one playing a horn at the back of carriage. So festive don't you agree.

Well good evening every one.

It is Christmas night and we have had a wonderful holiday.

Spent time with come of our children and grandchildren.

The fun will continue next week with more visiting of family.

Wishing You A Merry Christmas With A Few Thoughts From Me

Meet my great nephews and neice.. are they not adorable.. Boy do I miss seeing those faces weekly.

As this wonderful Christmas holiday approaches us I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and pray that we all welcome in a wonderful New Year. I pray that our next year is better and more prosperous than the last for all of us.

As we share the holidays with our family and friends lets please think and pray for those that are less fortunate then us. Pray for the hungry, the homeless and those suffering from addictions , diseases and mental illness. My one thought always is " but for the grace of God there go I ".

Lets take a moment and pray for our service men and service women. And for those that are in harms way in a foreign country give them an extra thought and prayer. Pray for their families that are left here to deal with every day happenings without them. The majority of them do so much for so little.

Lets pray for our government officials that they have the wisdom to do what is best for all of us and the knowledge to do it with out fighting.

If you are still blessed to have your parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts be thankful. Take a moment to hug and kiss them. Take a few minutes and ask them to share their stories with you. Some day sadly they will be gone and you will then wish that you knew more of their history.

I am reminded of a conversation at my hubby's birthday party. I made a comment about getting married the first time and my step son and his family had never heard that story. I have been married to husband #2 for almost 22 years. We celebrate our wedding anniversary on the 30Th of December. They know very little about my history. That is probably my fault and maybe some of theirs.

This is hubby and me 10 years ago at a dinner theater on New Years eve. Guess it is time to get a new nice picture of us. He still has the tie and I probably still have that outfit. Question is can I still get into it.

So much contact today is emails and text messages. I personally detest text messages saying" happy anything " Take a moment and call your family. Here a voice and say I love you to some one. When I get one I just delete it as if it did not happen.

Except for one text message from my grand daughter Kirsten. She sent me one and it is of a loud " Kiss " and "I Love You "I play it often. It was not sent for a birthday, Christmas message or any reason other than she thought of me and sent it. Grandpa got one too. Thanks Kirsten I smile when I replay it.

I am busy always searching and writing about my ancestors but I guess it is time to do some sharing of my life in writing. How I wish I had more of my parents, grandparents and past relatives stories. There are so many stories untold. As I share some of my life on my family blog site I have been printing some of them so I can give to family in the future.

Now with all of that I will leave you for now. It is time to make another pot of coffee, put on one of my favorite Christmas movies " Love Actually " with Hugh Grant and make my Watergate Salad for our Christmas eve party tonight.

Santa Is Wishing You A Merry Christmas Vintage Postcard 1915

Christmas is really creeping up on us, isn't it. This is my first Christmas in Minnesota in five years. Hubby and I spent 3 years in Southern California and then 1 1/2 in in Texas. No snow for all those Christmas.

We are now in Duluth and there is snow on the ground. Even though I hate the cold, icy roads and everything that goes with winter, it is so beautiful.

Here is another of my vintage Christmas postcards... we have Santa in his red suit going down the chimney. What happens if you do not have a chimney? That is what I wondered when I was a little girl.

This lovely card is postmarked 1915 Wisconsin and sent to a child by the last name of Butler of Janesville Wisconsin. Sadly the postmark goes over the first name.

Message is Dear Letha (hard to make out first name with the writing). I have never heard of Letha.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and many presents. I am sure you have been a good girl and deserve them.

Friendship Friday Vintage Postcard Of A Winter Beauty

For Friendship Friday today I am sharing one of my favorite vintage Christmas postcard.

It is titled Winter Beauty and is she not beautiful. Centered in a winter wonderland she is all decked out with a red coat with fur collar and sleeve trimmed in fur and matching muff. I love her black at trimmed with a flower in the center.

This postcard is dated 1909 and addressed to Mr. George Merches of Elbow Lake Minnesota and is from sister Gertrude.

Olson's had a surprise party yesterday. John is home as he is not well

1914 A Merry Christmas Postcard To The Friend Family

Today's pretty vintage Christmas postcard is addressed to Masters Percy and Orville Friend of O'Fallen, Illinois. The date is 1914 and is postmarked Colorado and from Aunt Grace and Uncle Dan and Dee.

A Merry Xmas and Happy New Year. We're going to have a 6 ft Xmas tree in North Park. I love these old postcards but so sad they are separated from their family.

Memories of Winter Through Vintage Postcards

I grew up in Duluth, Minnesota. It snowed by the first of December and stayed with us till spring. As a child I loved it. I would be outside playing, sliding down our little hill or trying to ski down this same hill. It really was not much of hill. That was the extent of my sking.

Here I am on my one and only pair of skies. It was about 1961. No hat, mittens and this was a fake leather jacket. Not very warm clothing. No wonder my grandfather was always yelling at me to put on a hat and gloves. This is our back hard and at the top of this little hill.

What I really loved to do was ice skate. The rink was at my grade school which was just 3 to 4 blocks away. I could spend hours there. How I hated it when the boys would take over the rink to play hockey. Maybe that is why I am not interested in hockey today. Rotten little boys hogging the rink.

Today's post card is a skiers view from the slopes of Elk Mountain Ski Center in Northeast Pa. near Scranton, Carbondale and Forest City. Here skiers prepare for a run to the ski lodge below.

Back of post card states this beautiful photo is by Ralph E Menne.

I especially find the tree beautiful and how it frames this postcard. But I love trees and I am always taking pictures of them. I just may have to post a few on my Live Goes On One Photo At A Time blog.

My mama was an amateur painter and once painted me a picture of a dead tree on a hill. I love that painting.

Vintage Postcard Bataille de la Marne 1914

Some time ago I picked up at an estate some vintage World War 1 era postcards. This one is listed as #115 Bataille de la Marne ... Heiltz le Maurupt with the date of 1914 at top of postcard.

Heiltz-le-Maurupt is a commune in the Marne department in north-eastern France.

Shown is a beautiful old building with rubble around it. Sad to see a beautiful building in ruins. Back of post card is unused but is brown at edges.

Visiting Saskatchewan 1943 With A Vintage Postcard

Today's posting is a vintage look at Saskatchewan Canada. The view is Second avenue looking north. Street scene shows drug store, cafe and other businesses. The cars parked are so beautiful in their vintage glory.

This is another family postcard passed down to me from my parents. It is written May of 1943. My father writing to my mother. They were not married until October in a whirlwind romance. They met in May and my father courted her before he left and through postcards. He says " I miss you more than I thought I would. "

They were married over 50 years. I am so glad that this post card was also saved.

Friendship Friday Vintage Postcard To Be Displayed In Historical Center

Hello vintage post card lovers. Here is an update to my last posting about Princeton, Minnesota postcard. One of the buildings has a Sherwin Williams advertising sign.

Well I received an email yesterday from the Midwestern Division President.

Email as follows

I am the President of Sherwin-Williams Midwestern Division. I happened to see your blog and noticed the postcard with the Sherwin Williams sign on the side of the building. It was very interesting. We (Sherwin Williams) have a historic "Center of Excellence" in our corporateheadquarters in Cleveland, OH. I was wondering if you would be willing to have a copy made of that postcard that could be displayed in our Centerof Excellence. I am willing to compensate you for your trouble.

I have made a very nice copy of my postcard and will be mailing it off to be displayed in their historical center. I am glad that my great grandfather Appleton held on to this card and that was passed on to me by my mother. A copy of this will now be displayed in the Historical Center for Sherwin Williams.

Now I have to untangle the mystery behind the postcard to Great Grandpa Appleton.

Mysteries Can Be Found In Vintage Family Postcards

Great vintage postcards are not only fun to look at but can be great additions to our genealogy family histories.

Today's posting is of an old card of Princeton Minnesota and the street scene of Eastern Ave. Post mark is hard to read, with magnifying glass looks like could be 1909 . At the bottom left of the post card is written copyrighted 1909. So that makes this postcard 101 years old.

The street scene has many businesses including Williams Paint on a sign on first building on the left and on the right middle of the block is a sign for a bakery and restaurant plus other signs that I can not make out. I did a http://www.google.com/ search on Sherwin Williams and found they started in 1866 so this is an old sign advertising their paint

There are residents on the left and one person walking on the right hand side. Most interesting is in the middle of the postcard are two wires in the sky and something is hanging from one. My thought is that it is a person crossing the street on the wire some how.

It is addressed to Appleton Esler of Mora Minnesota who was my grandma's step father .

What is written in pencil is hard to understand.

? cant possibly meet ? this week and I am not able to do my work now

Please don't send her ? a few days yet as I cant get any one to help me.

This is a mystery to me. I do not know a lot about great grandpa Appleton as of now. He married my great grandmother in 1893 and raised my grandmother as his. He was married once or twice before.

FRIENDSHIP FRIDAY The Beauty Of Duluth and Lake Superior

Here is another beautiful vintage postcard from my collection of Duluth Minnesota and Lake Superior. Today is Friendship Friday and you can view other contributors at http://thebestheartsarecrunchy.blogspot.com/2010/10/great-pumpkin-postcard-friendship.html
This one is the Aerial Lift Bridge and Ship Canal Entrance to Duluth Superior Harbor.
We are living on park point which is on the left hand side of the bridge as you are looking at it. Every day we cross this bridge to go into the Duluth down town. I love to the view of the lake as we cross the bridge.
Of course you need to try and time your crossing of the bridge as every half hour the bridge may go up to let boats go in and out of the harbor.
From the back of the post card is the following statement
The unique Aerial Lift Bridge and Ship Canal Entrance to Duluth Superior Harbor is an outstanding attraction of this popular summer vacation city. Total bridge load is 900 tons. Only 55 seconds are required to lift the span 135 feet. The Harbor is second only to that of New York City in shipping tonnage and through it passes about 60 percent of America's iron ore production from the great iron ores just north of Duluth.
Post card is unused .. printed by Zenith Interstate News Co Duluth, Minnesota and requires a one cent stamp.
This is not one of my oldest but is a beautiful postcard in my collection.

I love old vintage postcards, some can be over 100 years old. They were first commercially produced and introduced in the United States in 1893. These vintage post cards give us a glimpse into the past. They can show us places, and fashions and even humor of the past.

The Postcard Eras:Pioneer Era (1873 - 1898): The earliest United States Postal Cards were those issued by the post office. Distribution of those cards started on May 12, 1873. The first commercial postcards produced in this country were sold at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago Illinois in 1893. These were the first privately printed souvenir postcards.

Private Mailing Card Era (1898 - 1901): American publishers were allowed to print and sell cards marked "Private Mailing Card, Authorized by Act of Congress on May 19, 1898." Required 1 cent postage. The back of the card was for the address only, messages had to be written on the front.

Undivided Back Era (1901 - 1907): The government granted private printers the right to use the term "Post Card" on the back of private postcards on December 24, 1901. The back was still for the address only. Most picture postcards of this era had a white space a the bottom or to the side of the picture where the name of the sender and a short messages could be written. The publication of Real Photo Postcards started during this era. During this era, other countries started to allow the use of divided back postcards (allowing a message on the address side). England was the first to allow divided back postcards in 1902, France followed in 1904, Germany in 1905, and finally the United States in 1907

Divided Back Era (1907 - 1914): Postcards with a divided back, allowing for writing on the address side, were allowed in March of 1907. The postcard collecting hobby flourished during this time. In an age without radio or television, picture postcards offered an inexpensive and accessible view of the world. Up to this point, most postcards had come from Germany. Germany was more advanced in lithographic printing and the early German printed cards are of exceptional quality. With the World War, however, postcards had to come from England or the United States

White Border Era (1915 - 1930): Most of these were printed in the U.S. A white border was left around the picture during the printing process to save on ink costs. The descriptions printed on the back of the postcard got a little longer during this era. These postcards cards were often of poorer quality than earlier cards. There were fewer greetings postcards during this period, but scenic, events, and other types of cards remained popular

Linen Era (1930 - 1944): There are lots of linens out there. A new printing process allowed use of a high rag content paper with a linen look. If you look closely at these cards, you can see a weave texture in the paper. This new process also allowed for the use of bright, gaudy ink colors, resulting in very vivid, but somewhat unnatural coloring of the postcard pictures. Some linens were printed with a white border and other were printed "full bleed" - with colors extending to the outside edge of the card. Curt Teich, a Chicago postcard publisher, flourished during this era.Although linen cards may seem abundant to the collector, there were actually fewer of these cards printed than in earlier eras. Postcard collecting was not a popular hobby during this period and few people kept postcard albums. Many linen postcards were disposed of after being received.

Photo chrome Era (1945 - Present): The photo chrome, or chrome postcard is the type of postcard in use today. The first cards printed with this process were introduced by the Union Oil Company in their Western service stations in 1939. Photo chrome cards feature colorful photographic images, but should not be confused with Real Photo postcards. The photo chromes are reproduced through a printing process, while real photo postcards were actual photographs printed on special postcard sized photographic paper.

I can not pass a pile of postcards with out stopping and looking through them. I love the older ones and those that are written on are my favorites.

I have been sharing post cards from my home town Duluth, Minnesota. After 20 years I am back living here. We have rented the smallest of places and is truly a challenge but I love being close to Lake Superior and near my children and grandchildren.

Today's post card is of the Hotel Duluth. Written on back of post card is

Overlooking beautiful Lake Superior in the " air conditioned city" is Hotel Duluth, the finest and most modern hotel in the Arrowhead Region; 400 rooms with bath, Coffee shop, Dining room, excellent convention facilities and the famous Black Bear Lounge, with entertainment nightly.

It is now known as the Greysolon Plaza. In 1980 it was converted to apartments. Follow the link to read all about the Hotel Duluth/Greysolon Plaza and the story of the Black Bear Lounge. You can read of all the famous people who stayed there including President John F Kennedy.

Wordless Wednesday ( Almost ) I Love Flamingos

For Wordless Wednesday .. I will be almost wordless. This is a beautiful vintage post card postmarked 1946 of Flamingos and Nests at Hialeah Park, Miami, Florida. The post card is addressed to Mrs E C Foster of Newton Kansas from Clara and Brad.

The unique feature of Hialeah Park is its great flock of Flamingos. These birds were imported from Cuba and South America and in 1939 for the first time, Flamingos were raised to maturity in this country. That first season 62 birds were hatched at Hialeah and this year there were almost one hundred. The young birds are white and take on their rich coloring with maturity. Flamingos are fed a mixture of boiled rice, dried shredded shrimp, grains and cod liver oil.

I love looking at Flamingos... what a beautiful unique bird they are.

My voice has been quite the last couple of weeks. Reason is I was very sick. Started on the 13th my 62nd birthday ( happy birthday to me ) . Started to have pain in my groin area. I am a stubborn lady and thought I had pulled a muscle. I am not very active so not sure how I could of done this. I laid in bed taking Tylenol for 1 week with ice packs.Finally got some sense and got out of bed. Went to urgent care, emergency room next and into the hospital. Next day I was in surgery and found I had an infection. Just the luck of the universe I guess. I spent 11 days in the hospital on pain pills and antibiotics. I am now home with a wound vac and will be like this for 2 to 3 weeks with going to out patient for wound changes three times a week.I am sharing this adventure to hopefully be a lesson to others. I hope that you are not as stubborn as I am and if not feeling well do not wait a week thinking all will be better. I was very ill with infection going down my leg. I am glad I went in when I did and had the brilliant young doctor's I had.So dear friends in blog land and face book. Listen to your body and go to doctor if not feeling perfect.And thank you to my family for visiting and for the little voices of my grandchildren who could not visit telling me " I love you grandma, get well" Nothing better than hearing those words.I am glad to be home. Here is another vintage postcard of Duluth Minnesota. This one is of Chester Creek on Boulevard. In the back ground pictured is a gentleman standing over looking the creek. Today this area is all built up with houses and does not look this peaceful.

Post card is dated June 2nd 1908 Anoka Minnesota and addressed to Miss M Ronellenfitch of Buckman Minnesota.

I love used vintage post cards with a message. They are a peek into someone's history.

I love http://www.ancestry.com/. I found Mary in the 1895 Minnesota census. The writing is so pale hard to make out much. I do find that parents are from Germany and that Mary was born in Minnesota. At this time Mary is 3 years old and there are 12 children. Almost one a year.

We find both her father and mother's names and who is living in the house at this time. Many of the children have moved on.

Once again it is so sad that this post card is separated from family members. I hope that a family member will find this card some day among my offerings on eBay. I will be putting it up for sale in the future.

Sadly they have closed this beautiful old high school and using it for other uses. They built new Central. Besides Central we had East and Denfeld High Schools plus Marshall a private high school. Soon changes are coming again and eventually we will have only two high schools.

1931 e 5th street Duluth I planned to write you a couple weeks ago but

had another sudden attack of appendicitis. Was operated on 2

weeks ago yesterday and had it out.

The brought me home from the hospital Saturday. Am getting

along nicely and begin to feel better

already. Am still pretty weak but can eat and that helps. Expect

to be out again in 10 days or so. Wont come to St Paul now til on my way west in August

Look what I found this week end at the flea market in Minnesota. It is a pretty vintage postcard of the Canal Entrance of Duluth Minnesota. Lake Superior is huge and beautiful.

Post card is postmarked June 1907 and addressed to

Written on the front is

Dear Lyman

We were glad to get your postal from California but sorry to hear that you had returned home ill. We hope that you will soon be well again and all send our love. Mary W Carter.

My plan is to put up for sale in the Antique Mall I just joined. The mall is just a couple of blocks from the Canal and gets lots of tourists.

Post card is in good condition but does have some small creases on the corners.

I took a few minutes and searched for Lyman on http://www.ancestry.com/ and believe I found him in the 1910 census. He was living in Ward 1 of Duluth, Minnesota. Was the son of Frank J and Eulalie. In 1910 he was 14 years old and had a sister Margaret 18 and brother Kenneth 16 years old. He was born in Michigan and was found in the Michigan census in 1900. After 1910 I am not sure where he went.

Denver Colorado Going To St. Mark's Church Early 1900's

Being that it is Sunday I thought I would post a vintage post card of a church. As I went through my many cards I did not see many churches. I must of sold most of them. I think vintage postcards are a great addition to a genealogy project. I love finding post cards from the city and time period my family lived in an area.
Today's post card is of St.Mark's Church, Denver Colorado. This post card is from the early 1900's and is unused. It was made in Germany and has the NO.3015 on lower corner. Pictured is this large beautiful church. Going towards the church is a couple with her arm in his. The scene is so quiet and peaceful.

One of my great grandparents married in Denver, Colorado in 1891, which would of been about 20 or so years before this post card was made. I date this post card to around 1910 because of the divided back and the word post card printed at top.

We are busy packing and today we are having a moving sale. In two weeks we make the big move from Texas to Minnesota. We will be nearer our children and grandchildren. While much COLDER the warmth of seeing my family will help.

Love Expressed In A Vintage Postcard 1909

The year is 1909 and this is a beautiful post card from that time. That is 101 years ago. My grandparents would of been about about 16 or 17 years old and probably catching the eye of the opposite sex.

This was posted march 29th 1909 in Minnesota and mailed to Miss Martha Kautz. Hard to read what he is writing but something about going to a dance and not taking his girl along with him and she went back on me. He guesses Martha will have to be his girl till he finds another one.

Fun to see these post cards and put them into contact with our ancestors. Will probably put this in a family page with my grandparents with a comment that this was popular at that time frame.

Soldiers' Monument Worcester Mass

Here is a beautiful old vintage post card to honor Memorial Day. It is of the Soldiers' Monument, Worchester Mass. Is unused except for writing saying Brother Charlie.

The Soldiers' Monument, a memorial to Civil War heroes, was dedicated July 15, 1874. Its erection was made possible partly through an appropriation from the City Government; partly by private subscription. The Citizens' Committee responsible for this private subscription was headed by Mr. George Crompton, a leading industrialist of that time. The designer of the monument was the famous sculptor, Randolph Rogers, who left an appropriate memorial of Mr. Crompton in the figure of the sailor on the monument, one of the four depicting various arms of the service. There has been so much news lately of the Ford Motor Company, I thought it was time to share this beautiful vintage post card. I love the coloring in it. It is of the Ford Motor Co. Building Texas Centennial Exposition, Dallas .

It has not been used. I searched out the Texas Centennial and found this information.

The Texas Centennial Exposition was a World's Fair held at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas (USA) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Texas's independence from Mexico in 1836. More than 50 buildings, designed by George Dahl, were constructed for the Exposition, which ran from June 6, 1936 to November 29, 1936. The exposition attracted over 10 million visitors, and cost around $25 million [1]. Gene Autry's film The Big Show was filmed on location and shows many of the buildings and events of the event.
The Cavalcade of Texas, a historical pageant covering four centuries of Texas history, was one of the most popular attractions at the Exposition. The Hall of Negro Life was another popular attraction and is believed to be the first recognition of African culture at a World's Fair.
The Centennial Exposition required a massive publicity effort, but the promotion department was stymied by a lack of photographs. Never before had the state been photographed for advertising purposes. The Centennial Exposition hired Polly Smith to travel the state and tell the story of Texas through photos.

This helps date this post card to the 1936 making it 74 years old.

Visiting Colorado Through Vintage Postcards

I am continuing through Colorado and my vintage postcards. It is of the U. S. Mint and Colfax Ave. Denver Colorado. Showing city and county buildings,library, north end of civic center, capitol and cathedral.

A great number of Denver's important structures are grouped along stately Colfax Avenue within a space of a few blocks. Among them are the Capitol, the State Office Building, Cathedral, Civic Center, Library. City and County Building and the U. S. Mint. The Denver mint is one of the three in operations in the United States.

No date on this post card but stamp holds a one cent stamp.

Today I am visiting Colorado. My father was born in Craig Colorado and his family lived in Colorado until my grandfather Perry moved on to Washington . My great grandfather Adam lived and died in Colorado. So for his memory is this beautiful vintage postcard.

This post card is of Elephant Rock, near Palmer Lake, Colorado. It is postmarked 1941.

Palmer Lake is a little over 400 miles from Craig Colorado.

Elephant Rock, near Palmer Lake, close to the railroad is to been seen one of the most curious rock formations to be found in Colorado. The sandstone has been weathered into the very realistic shape of an elephant, and is an object of interest to all who travel this way.

Great old vintage postcard of the Huckbay Public School dated February 22, 1912. Is unused and marked maker as L. C. Doolittle, Maker , Esterville , Iowa.

I bought this here in Texas. I did a search on google and found this article

This is a great piece of vintage history for anyone interested in old buildings or schools. Would be wonderful in a genealogy family notebook for someone who had family that went there.

Elephant Butte Lake, Near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico 1954

I am continuing in New Mexico with my vintage postcards. Here is the other vintage postcard I have of Elephant Butte Lake, Near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Isn't the coloring beautiful.

Elephant Butte Dam on the Rio Grande derives its name from the likeness of the " Butte " or hill to an Elephant. it is but a short drive from the famous Hot Springs to the Dam which creates a lake 40 miles in length, stocked with many varieties of game fish and is well known as a fisherman's paradise. The curative waters of the Hot Springs near by , excellent fishing and mild winters make a year round resort for the 60,000 or more tourists who visit here annually. The Regatta each spring is a special attraction.

I have traveled from Texas to New Mexico with today's vintage postcard. It is from 1955 and it is of the boat landing and bathing beach, Elephant Butte Lake, Near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

I love the colors and the vintage cars. In the water there are also some small boats waiting to be enjoyed.

Huey P Long Bridge New Orleans Louisiana over the Mississippi 1938

What a beautiful vintage 1938 postcard. Features the Huey P Long Bridge, New Orleans Louisiana connecting New Orleans with the Great West . The bridge was erected at a cost of 13,000,000. The total length from the railroad approach to the end is four and one half miles. The channel span over the navigation channel of the river is 790 feet. The longest free bridge in American and one of today's greatest engineering feats. Two auto roadways one on each side which are 18 feet wide. Time in erecting about 3 years.

Here is a fun vintage postcard I found this last weekend at an antique store to resell on eBay. Has two cute monkeys sitting on a limb. One says to the other " You Have made A Monkey Of Me "

This post card is postmarked Jan 21 1918 and postmarked in Minnesota.

Addressed to Miss Melinda Haenge of Benton County.

Writer comments " Ha Ha Fine weather here no snow since you left "

Well we are into the 6th day of the New Year and I am ending my postings of Vintage New Year Post cards with these two pretty cards. They are similiar but with a small difference in coloring, poem and the home scene is on a different side on each of the post card and has a small difference.
One is lavender flowers and offers
" At Dawn
of the year
I am sending to you
The season's best wishes most hearty
and true"

The other card is blue flowers and says

" May joy and peace and loving cheer

Make bright for you the coming year "

both vintage post cards are unused and in series 341 A and D

What a pretty vintage post card. There is a horse drawn carriage with a family and their packages. Snow is falling and they are at the corner of Good and Cheer. What a beautiful peaceful looking post card. Gives us a glimpse of what life was like just 100 years ago.
